Δύο εβδομάδες μετά το ρεκόρ που σημείωσε ο Sebastien Loeb στο Pikes Peak, η Peugeot πήγε στο Goodwood το 208 T16 Pikes Peak αλλά και τη σανίδα του σερφ που ετοίμασε. Εκεί ο Grégory Guilvert, δοκιμαστής οδηγός της Γαλλικής εταιρίας, κατάφερε και σημείωσε τον ταχύτερο χρόνο στη διάσημη διαδρομή του βρετανικού event.

O Guilvert σημείωσε 45,86 δευτερόλεπτα, ακριβώς τον ίδιο χρόνο που πέτυχε και ο Nick

Heidfeld με μια Lola B12/60. Το ρεκόρ στη διαδρομή το κατέχει ο Heidfeld από το 1998, αφού πίσω από το τιμόνι μιας McLaren MP4/13 είχε σημειώσει χρόνο 41,6 δευτερολέπτων. Στη τρίτη θέση ταχύτερου χρόνου ανέβηκε το B12 69/EV της Drayson Racing.

Within two weeks of winning at Pikes Peak so conclusively, the Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car has done it again – at the 20th Goodwood Festival of Speed, making it victory for Peugeot on two continents, up two famous hill climbs for the 208.

The 208 T16 Pikes Peak car came straight from its success at 14,110 feet in Colorado into Goodwood. The car had not run between the two hill climb activities. At Goodwood, driving duties were deputised to Peugeot Sport test-driver Grégory Guilvert, also rookie to this event and to the challenges its short, but technically-precise course required.

With just six chances to acclimatise himself to the hill climb, and with the car now running at sea-level, Grégory had two runs on Friday, a timed practice on Saturday and two on Sunday morning, with a final in the late afternoon. In the event, the fastest time of the weekend turned out to be achieved on the Sunday morning, perhaps helped by the slightly cooler air, such were the high temperatures over the Festival weekend.

The time set was, by coincidence, exactly the same as Nick Heidfeld’s run in the Group C prototype Lola B12/60 race car at 45.86 seconds. Nick Heidfeld also holds the out-right Goodwood hill climb record set in 1998 at 41.6 seconds in a McLaren MP4 13.

For Peugeot, the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed was a great success, coming exactly 100-years after one of its first – a one-two finish at the French Grand Prix – and while it was a very hot weekend, the Peugeot stand was easily the coolest, drawing continuous crowds to watch fellow visitors embark on a ride experience on the Peugeot stand on the ‘Flowrider’ surf machine.

Visitors to the Festival were able to see a wide range of Peugeot cars, driven and displayed, included the all-conquering 208 T16 Pikes Peak, the 600bhp V8 hybrid electric, carbon and copper clad Onyx Concept car, the Proxima and RC HYbrid in the Cartier Style et Luxe, and the world debut of the RCZ R – a 270bhp Sports Coupé with race-bred development, plus the new 208 GTi, a 208 Nürburgring 24hr endurance race car, the luxury 208 XY, the new 2008 Crossover and Colin McRae’s old Peugeot 309 from a private collector.

DRAYSON RACING TAKE PODIUM FINISH AT GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED HILLCLIMB

Drayson Racing secured a podium spot at the Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend, with a third place finish for the all-electric B12 69/EV.

It was the electric hypercar’s first high-profile run since it broke the FIA World Electric Land Speed Record for sub-1000kg cars (subject to FIA approval) three weeks ago with Lord Drayson at the wheel. Back in its high downforce circuit specification, the B12 69/EV, which was driven by Jonny Cocker for the weekend, recorded a best time of 47.34 seconds in Sunday’s final shootout, just 0.02 secs behind the second placed Peugeot 208 T16 that won at Pikes Peak a few weeks ago.

This represents a new electric record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, over 6 seconds faster than the time set when the car made its Goodwood hill debut last year. That underlines the rapid progress being made by Drayson Racing in developing its electric powertrain technology.

To aid battery charging between runs during the tight Goodwood schedule, the Drayson B12 69/EV uses QualcommHalo Wireless Charging technology. This means the car does not need to be plugged in but instead charges from a portable pad in the floor and represents the future of EV infrastructure for road cars.

Michelin is also working in partnership with Drayson Racing to develop specialist tyres that are perfectly suited to the very high torque characteristics of an electric racing car.

Commenting on the Goodwood result, Lord Drayson, CEO of Drayson Racing Technologies, said: “A podium finish here at Goodwood, where there are over 300 cars from many eras and racing classes competing up the hill, illustrates how swiftly we are developing electric vehicle technology through motorsport competition. Clearly we have some work to do before electric beats the internal combustion engine at Goodwood. There’s always next year, though.”
