Job Description

As a member of the Office of Sponsored Research, the incumbent will be responsible for the general coordination of research grants of the Institute as well as the expansion of the Institute’s portfolio of sponsored research. More specifically, the holder of the position will have, among others, the below responsibilities:

Duties and Responsibilities

Collaborating with the Research leadership and staff as well as with the relevant administration to ensure the proper management of research grantsEnsuring that the implementation and management of research projects and grants comply with the required sponsor and CyI regulationsProvision of support and guidance to Research leadership and staff through meetings, training, awareness-raising sessions relevant to project proposals, innovations and timesheetsMonitoring research opportunities relevant to the Institute’s fields of research and communicating those to the Institute’s researchersAdministering proposal related procedures and supporting researchers in the preparation of proposals where required; general tracking of the proposal life cycleActing as a liaison with partners and funding agenciesMonitoring research projects and reporting obligationsWorking with the Institute’s management to assess research success criteria.

The appointment will be initially for a fixed term period with the possibility of renewal. The salary will depend on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Candidate Profile

It is desired that applicants have a background in research and science and understand the processes involved in the announcement, submission, evaluation and administration of research grants. They should be familiar to working with scientists and understand their specific needs. More specifically the holder of the position should possess the following:

· University degree (or equivalent) in studies relevant to scientific or project management and/or other related studies.

· At least 3 years previous working experience relevant to the requirements of the position

· Previous experience and/or specialization to the management of EU research projects will be considered an advantage

Experience in scientific proposals and reports writing will be considered an advantage

· Excellent knowledge and command of the Greek and English languages.

· Excellent IT skills in MS Office as well as ability in the use of other software and systems.

· High level organizational, analytical and problem solving skills

· Ability to multitask changing priorities with limited supervision in a high-pressure work environment

· High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt in a multicultural environment

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the Cyprus Institute are represented by three research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC).

The EEWRC aims to explore issues of global significance in the fields of energy-, environmental- and water research, with a focus on their specific regional, East-Mediterranean manifestations. Its research agenda addresses the great challenges related to: the mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitated by climate change, a reduced dependence on hydrocarbon energy sources and achieving a low carbon economy through the employment of renewables (solar) and enabling a sustainable management of water and other natural resources in arid and semi-arid environments.

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellow or a Research Assistant (Temporary employment of six months) at its Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC). The position is related to and financed through EU-funded research projects.

Description of the Position

The Post-doctoral Fellow/Research Assistant in Climate Sciences will be involved in the collection, processing and documentation of observational, modeling and sector relevant climate data to support customized products, to assess new modeling tools and to statistically downscale climate information to the local scale in the Mediterranean Basin.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be involved in analyzing and assessing (including a base-line quality control) the reliability and quality of climate data and data related to other relevant sectors from various sources and the assessment of (regional) climate modeling projections. This will enable the set-up of a data repository to serve as a base for future applications, which will be gradually extended to the Greater Mediterranean Region.

The Mediterranean data repository, with visualization and analysis options, will be a shared visual database composed of climatic, modeling and sector data. The repository will combine multiple data sets of different structure and origin.

He/she will be instrumental in Identifying parameters and indicators directly related to key sectors considered in the project and target locations and development of transfer functions identifying the relations between climate and sector relevant data.

Profile and Requirements

· PhD in physical or mathematical sciences and at least one to two years of post-doctoral research experience. Highly qualified candidates with an MSc and appropriate professional qualifications will also be considered.

·An adequate publication record and familiarity with the formulation of research proposals.

· Experience in initiating and maintaining contacts in academic circles, international research organizations and government institutions in the Eastern Mediterranean.

·Excellent knowledge of oral and written English. Knowledge of Greek will be considered as an advantage.

Appointments will be on a full-time basis for a fixed term of six months with the potential of contract renewal and/or regular appointment, depending on research project opportunities relevant to the selected candidate’s expertise, performance and availability of funding. The anticipated starting date of the job is in September 2013.

CaSToRC is one of three Centres with a research focus on the development and application of intense computational methods to advance scientific and technological research in Cyprus and the region. It operates in partnership with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and in particular with its National Centre for Supercomputing Applications as well as the network of European Supercomputing Centres coordinated in EU PRACE projects, in particular, Research Centre, Juelich, Germany. Through the operation of high performance supercomputing systems and associated user support for Cyprus and the region, CASTORC provides services to many scientific and technical communities.

Position Description

The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) invites applications for Project Manager/ Assistant Project Manager. The candidate, as part of the project management team, will participate in the coordination and implementation of research projects in CaSToRC. The research projects will mainly be related to computational science in general and high performance computing in particular. Duties will include the participation in the day-to-day management of research projects in CaSToRC ensuring timely execution of deliverables, tracking of reporting and financial status. They will also include organization of dissemination, educational and training events, preparation of leaflets and announcements and communication with the partners involved. The candidate is expected to also engage in exploring new project ideas and participating in proposal writing. The nature of research projects may require occasional travelling. The successful candidate will be working at the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia.

The exact placement as Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager with the relevant job responsibilities will depend on the qualifications and work experience of the selected candidate.The appointment will be on a full time basis, initially for a fixed term period of two years with the possibility of renewal.

Candidate Profile

The candidate should have a scientific background that enables the realization of scientific projects. Experience in research will be considered an advantage. The position requires a proactive, creative, independent thinking person with passion for promoting science and technology. In particular, the position has the following essential requirements:

· MSc/MA or higher in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry or Engineering (a PhD degree will be considered an advantage)

· Basic knowledge of the implementation of research projects

· Knowledge in programming and IT

· Excellent presentation skills

· Proficiency in spoken and written English is a requisite. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage

· Ability to multitask changing priorities with minimum supervision

· High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt in a multicultural environment

Additional, preferred skills include:

· Experience in project management including budgeting and financial administration of projects

· A good understanding of High Performance Computing
