Artificial intelligence used in Greece’s drive to crack down on illegal constrction

Greece’s environment ministry has announced its use of AI, satellites and drones to battle illegal construction ravaging popular tourist destinations and islands.

Authorities revealed their new-fangled strategy, saying the use of such modern tool , in cluding AI, had managed to reign in illegal construction by 90 percent on the holiday island of Mykonos, where

the illegal buidling is most rife.

The strategy, ministry officials said, underscores a clear message: that adherence to environmental regulations is paramount, and that the Greek state will not hesitate to impose severe penalties on those flouting stiff rules against violators, including power cuts and the suspension of business operations found breaching building laws.

Officials said the decision to deploy AI, satellites and drones in efforts to crack down on illegal construction marked “a new chapter in Greece’s dedication to sustainable development and responsible tourism,” setting a precedent for environmental governance in the Mediterranean and beyond.
