Syriza leader and husband announce wedding celebrations

Syriza leader Stefanos Kasselakis, and his husband, Tyler McBeth, have announced their plans for a grand wedding celebration on the picturesque island of Crete.

The couple, who previously married in a discreet ceremony in New York, will

now celebrate their wedding with friends and family in a four-day event from August 28-31 in Chania, Crete.

The wedding, set to take place in Mr. Kasselakis’ ancestral village of Skines, is expected to be a vibrant affair, reflecting the couple’s deep ties to the region and their commitment to celebrating Greek culture and traditions.

The invitation, which has been widely circulated in the Greek media, expresses the couple’s excitement:

“T & S Wedding … We are so excited to welcome you all to one of our favorite places to celebrate this special day …. XOXO Tyler & Stefanos.”

This celebration comes on the heels of a historic change in Greece’s legislation.

In February 2024, Greece became the first Christian Orthodox-majority country to legalize same-sex marriage, marking a significant step forward for LGBTQ rights in the nation.

The move was celebrated as a milestone for inclusivity and equality, paving the way for couples like Mr. Kasselakis and Mr. McBeth to publicly celebrate their love.

Pundits say their wedding in Crete amounts to a public affirmation of changing attitudes towards marriage equality in Greece and a testament to the country’s evolving cultural landscape.
