Athens to enforce new pet protection laws from next week

The new laws include a 100-euro fine for pet owners that do not clean up after their pets when these soil in public places and hefty fines for cases of animal abuse and torture, as high as 30,000 euros. In cases where perpetrators are pet shop owners, they may even have their licence to operate revoked.

Individuals may also be liable for a fine of 300 euros for failing to supply a copy of their pet’s electronic chip certificate to the municipality or for abandoning an injured animal hit in a traffic accident and may be fined up to 1,000 euros for selling a pet less than eight weeks old.

After the first months of implementing the new laws, the Athens municipality intends to hold a seminar in order to assess the results with other municipalities and competent authorities.
