Independent MP Konstantinos Floros released on bail After parliament brawl

An arrested independent lawmaker has been released on bail but slapped with a restraining order after punching and beating a rival colleague in Parliament.

Konstantinos Floros was released but ordered to keep a distance of at least 50 metres from Vassilis Grammenos after a violent altercation that has sent shockwaves across the country.

The assault, which occurred during a heated parliamentary

debate over a defamation lawsuit, saw Mr. Floros accosting and assaulting Mr. Grammenos, a member of the nationalist Greek Solution party, breaking his nose and twisting his hand.

The scuffle ensued outside the plenary hall as lawmakers moved to lift the immunity of Greek Solution leader Kyriakos Velopoulos, who faces a defamation case initiated by Mr. Floros’ father.

The confrontation left Mr. Grammenos with several injuries, including nasal fractures and a dislocated jaw.

Mr. Floros has since then expressed remorse, saying he “acted in the fury of the moment.”

“Now,” he said, “I realise it was completely wrong. Such conduct is unbecoming of a Greek parliamentarian and sets a poor example.”

Mr. Floros faces a spray of assault charges and if convicted he faces up to 10 years in prison.

On Thursday, Mr. Grammenos accused his assailant of trying to strangle him.

“Not only was I punched, but he [Floros] tried to strangle me.
