Funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the restoration will allow an audience of 1,500 to enjoy cultural events organised by the Ministry of Culture, the local Ephorate of the Archaeological Service, the Athens-Epidaurus Festival, the town of modern Messini, the Diazoma theatre preservation society and the Society for the Archaeological Studies of Messini.

The ancient city was founded by Theban general Epaminondas in 369 BC and was considered a powerful state. Its surviving remains include houses, forts, sanctuaries and tombs, and is distinguished by a methodical city plan. Its theatre was built in the 4th century BC and preserves features of the Hellenistic and Roman eras.
