Greece Advances Coastal Management with Digital Concessions

In a significant move to modernize coastal management, Greece has initiated the implementation of a new law that streamlines the concession process for the use of its coastline and beaches.

The new legislation introduces a digital platform, allowing for more than 1200 locations to be auctioned by May 31.

The digital registry already includes 6,500 active contracts from previous years. The concessions, along with new ones to emerge at the end of the month, will be regulated under a unified

framework designed to prevent the illegal occupation of public spaces and to control the extent of the areas under concession.

Under the new legislation, property services and all relevant authorities are mandated to enforce the new legislative and regulatory framework. The change aims to ensure a transparent and efficient allocation of beachfront usage rights, reflecting the government’s commitment to safeguarding public assets and promoting responsible commercial activity, authorities have said.

They say that the transition to a fully digital auction system underscores Greece’scommitment to technological innovation in governance.
