High school teachers fail to agree on length of strike action

A new meeting has been scheduled for Thursday to try and reach a common position on the strike action.

During Tuesday’s meeting, SYRIZA-affiliated group representatives proposed that the union go ahead with repeated 48-hour strikes, while ANTARSIA representatives wanted an indefinite strike. The New Democracy party-affiliated group was in favour of a single 48-hour strike, as was the Communist Party of Greece (KKE)-affiliated group. The PASOK-affiliated group proposed two 48-hour strikes.

The associations of high school teachers (ELME) are to convene in the first week of September, while the final decision is to be taken just one day before schools open, on September 10.

It is highly likely that any strike action will be called for the second week of the new school year, after September 16.
